   Résumé
   À la suite d'un naufrage, un petit groupe de gens de la bonne société se retrouvent sur une île déserte ; peu à peu, leur maître d'hôtel exerce sur eux une véritable tyrannie, souriante mais implacable.
   Commentaire
   Il s'agit d'une des meilleures «comédies légères» de Cecil B. De Mille, genre moins connu que ses superproductions, mais dans lequel il excella cependant. Le thème est original, l'humour incisif et la distribution brillante. Le film est aussi représentatif de l'art de De Mille pour «épicer» ses sujets: en changeant le titre de la pièce Admirable Crichton pour Male and Female, en réussissant à y glisser des scènes «antiques» oniriques ou en filmant Gloria Swanson au bain. Ces éléments kitsch, s'ils ne sont pas forcément du meilleur goût, n'en sont pas moins réjouissants et assurèrent le succès commercial du film.
